The wood takes up most of the frame and most of the interest — one big trunk running down from the upper left, a torn root mass on the right, smaller limbs half-buried in the wash. All of it is bleached pale, and in monochrome the grain and the splintering come forward hard. The surf running through has gone smooth with a long exposure. The lighthouse stands small and dark in the middle distance under a plain overcast sky.

Rough foreground, quiet background. In black and white it is a study in texture.
