Interview with SC Voyager

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Falk.

Blue Folly

Hi Justin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in Staten Island, New York. It was there, in 2002 as a former finance professional, I began taking seriously my life-long passion of photography, taking candid personals and landscape shots around New York City. After relocating to the South Carolina Lowcountry in 2007, I decided to make my passion a profession, going full-time in 2012 with Justin Falk Photography.

Purple Lightning

I got my first real break in Charleston’s competitive photography industry when I was hired on as a Staff Photographer of the James Island Messenger newspaper here in Charleston in 2012. Since that time, many of my photographs have appeared in a wide variety of local and national publications, media outlets including The Charleston Post & Courier, USA Today, Newsweek, Travel and Leisure, the Charleston City Paper, and Charleston Magazine. I also do a lot of work with the Charleston Preservation Society because I love Charleston and I believe in what they stand for which is preserving the heart and soul of Charleston.

I have received a number of commendations for my work in many events in the area including but not limited to Magnolia Gardens photo contests, Coastal Carolina Fair’s photo contests, Charleston Magazine’s annual photography contests, was named a finalist as the best photographer to “follow” at Charleston Social Media Day awards ceremony, Top 10 Wedding Photographers in Charleston and more!

Magnolia Gardens I

Today I have a permanent booth seven days a week selling my landscape photography at the Charleston City Market and have had my booth for seven years. I am always booked shooting 50+ weddings throughout the year, multiple family photo sessions, surprise wedding proposals, creative pet photography, and events for some of the biggest companies in Charleston. Recently, I have also taken on the challenge of opening a photography studio in West Ashley adding another aspect to my business to include Holiday mini sessions, professional headshots, and maybe start teaching other new photographers the nature of the business.

My main photographic focus has been to capture the simple, iconic beauty of the S.C. Lowcountry in its purest form. In both my landscape photography and in all my portraiture, I do my best to utilize my unique artistic eye to create compelling images that capture life lived well against the backdrop of the natural world.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As with any new endeavor it has not been easy along the way. I do look back on the challenges as opportunities to perfect my craft, sharpen my skills and become the best photographer and business owner I can be. Among the challenges have been breaking into the City Market scene, setting myself apart from the many photographers in the area, and the obvious pandemic in the past two years.

But overall, despite the obstacles and challenges, I feel like I have been pretty darn lucky by surrounding myself with wonderful people who have helped and supported me along the way!

As you know, we’re big fans of Justin Falk Photography. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Owner of Justin Falk Photography in the Charleston City Market and wedding photographer.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The biggest thing I see in this industry is technological advancement. More and more companies are coming out with AI programs that allow photographers to become so much more creative.
