St. Phillip’s Sunset I
St. Philip's Church steeple at sunset, from up above the street.
Getting height changes the church completely. You are level with the clock faces rather than looking up at them, so the tower reads as a stack of stages, each one set back from the one below — portico, then the block with the rose windows, then the louvered belfry, then the spire. The stone holds the last of the warm light. Behind it the cirrus has gone pink and is drawn across the sky in long soft strokes.
Sandstone and pink. Vertical, and it fits the shape of the building rather than fighting it.
