What is left of an old structure in the surf at Folly Beach.

The pilings have been worn down for years and they have not worn evenly — the tops have shredded into splayed fibrous crowns, like the ends of frayed rope, while one long beam still runs from the bottom of the frame back into the water. The tide pours around all of it, pulled by the exposure into pale blue and white streams. There is a small warm break in the cloud at the upper left. Everything else is cold.

Blue and rust, with a great deal of broken texture. Vertical, and quite raw.
