Underneath the Folly Beach Pier
Underneath the Folly Beach Pier, looking down its length in fog.
The structure does something you only see from down here. The joists and cross-bracing overhead come together into a long peaked run, and the two rows of pilings taper away to a single point. The pilings are green with algae at the waterline and rusted brown above it. Fog took the far end, so the pier simply stops in white rather than arriving anywhere. The water between the pilings has gone smooth.
Symmetrical, muted, and far quieter than the beach above it. It reads as architecture.
