ASK A LOCAL

We here at Justin Falk Photography know it can be difficult to find a good place to grab some grub with so many options. Charleston is known not just for its “southern charm” but also for its cuisine. Anything from fine dining with establishments such as The Tempest (downtown Charleston) to great barbecue such as Swig & Swine (West Ashley). Luckily, we are here to help you out and make the deciding process a little easier. The team here at Justin Falk Photography and Angel Oak Studios are novice foodies and Charlestonians who are well-versed in local cuisine.

RuRu’s Tacos & Tequila

One of our favorite places for a quick drink and burger is Home Team Barbecue. We all drool over the Fiery Ron’s Burger with a Gamechanger drink to wash it down. You may see us at their Monday night trivia as well, if you do, come up and thank us for the recommendation! If burgers aren’t your style that’s okay too, try out Swig & Swine for their amazing Burnt Ends! We personally call it “meat candy”, it is the ends of brisket cut off and caramelized in their homemade barbecue sauce. Both of these delicious barbecue restaurants are located in West Ashley, Charleston.

If you are in the Charleston Downtown area, there is a surplus of splendid eating establishments all around town. A few of our favorites are Fleet Landing, Crab House, RuRu’s Tacos & Tequila, and Church & Union. First on this list for Downtown eateries is, Fleet Landing. Known for its extensive and locally sourced seafood and its immaculate view off the pier it is situated on. One of our favorite things to eat there is the “Charleston Shrimp & Grits.” Staying in the same vein as seafood, next up on this list is The Crab House. Two of our favorite things there are their burger and their She Crab Soup. This establishment is very popular for carriage drivers and market vendors alike, come in and say hey to them! If you’re looking for a good margarita and some tacos, then RuRu’s is your place! They have some of the best margaritas we have had in all of Downtown Charleston. Their taco list is fun and filled with movie and show references. Check out their Reuben Feffer (a rice bowl with marinated skirt steak) or any of their tacos on their long list, you won’t be disappointed! Last on the list for Downtown restaurants is Church & Union. Church & Union is more of a nicer sit-down restaurant that won’t break the bank! Between the ambiance and smaller menu, it makes it easy to relax and enjoy your meal. A couple of our favorite things on their menu are the House Ramen and their Fried Chicken BLT with house-made pimento cheese.

Holy City Brewery

If you don’t feel like going all the way Downtown for some good grub and are in the North Charleston area, then this next part is for you! Head over to EVO Pizza in North Charleston for some great wood-fired pizzas and tasty fresh sandwiches. We would recommend trying any of their sandwiches or their Pork Trifecta pizza, the trick with this pie is that the sausage is house-made. The next place is near and dear to all of us at Justin Falk Photography and Angel Oak Studios, it is none other than Holy City Brewery. Holy City Brewery creates some of the best beer in the local and Lowcountry area, as well as having a fantastic menu. When we say that there is no bad choice on that menu, we mean it. Two of our favorite meals are their HCB Gyro and The Phillies (either chicken or ribeye). The next place on this list is Firefly Distillery. However, this may not be a restaurant, we would still like to shine the limelight on this establishment. Let’s say you did not have a chance to really explore Charleston and all of the eateries available, we would suggest running by Firefly and picking up a bottle of their signature Sweet Tea Vodka. The sweet tea is sourced from the Charleston Tea Plantation, it will be like taking home a taste of Charleston, this vodka pairs well with one of our Charleston prints. What’s better than sitting in front of a Charleston photo drinking some Charleston vodka, let alone it being Sweet Tea!

If you’re in the Mount Pleasant area and looking for some great seafood, then boy do we have a spot for you! Really anything on Shem Creek, we would recommend, however, to be specific we have two places for you all to check out. The first place would be Tavern & Table which has a very simplified menu to curb your hunger. With its mix of tavern food and delicious seafood-inspired dishes, you’ll have a hard time deciding what you should get. To help alleviate the decision making we would recommend the Dynamite Shrimp as an appetizer followed by the Bison Burger as your entrée, that way you get a bit of both worlds, land and sea. Next up on this list is Saltwater Cowboys, this place has a great cultivation of both barbecue and seafood. Personally, the team here at Justin Falk Photography and Angel Oak Studios tend to get their Smoked Wings to start with, followed by either the Creek Bowl with grilled shrimp or their Shrimp Po Boy.

We hope this list can help you broaden your taste buds and fill your belly.
